My little orange tabby, Pyewacket, died in my arms Tuesday. She was 16.

It was so sudden -- she had thyroid problems that we were managing very well and was healthy up until the last day. She was playful and in great fettle Monday night, but didn't come down for breakfast Tuesday morning. She died at 2 in the afternoon.

I'd post her picture but I can't manage it just yet.

Before she lost her hearing last year she would come when I sang for her. If she was hiding all I had to do was belt out a few bars of Happy Birthday and in she'd bounce, all "What do you want?"

I've had many pets throughout my life, but her loss is like no other. I thought she'd make it to California with us and grow old in the sunshine.

And here I was, thinking either D or me would die before we got to the promised land, but no -- just my baby.

Oh man... I am so sorry, AF. I was just thinking about you the other day, wondering how things were going in the moving process, and this is not the kind of post I hoped to see from you.

May I ask, what is the origin of her name?

She sounds like she was a very sweet cat. And I love that she came when you sang for her. That is fantastic.

I send lots of hugs.

Thanks, S....Pyewacket is the name of an old witch's familiar. Not sure if it was originally a cat. I first heard it in the Jimmy Stewart/Kim Novak movie "Bell, Book and Candle" -- I had a terrible crush on Kim Novak and her familiar's name in the movie was Pyewacket. So I vowed if I ever had a kitty, that would be its name.

One day, when she was a wee kitty, I was telling D how I was the lead soprano in my HS glee club, and that I'd go off-key so often that I'd throw off the whole club. To demonstrate, I belted out an ear-spiltting version of "If Ever I Would Leave You" and Pye came flying in the room, jumped on the bed, ears pricked up and all "WHAT?????" So we trained her to come whenever we sang. That's how we called her until about a year ago when we realized she'd lost her hearing. But the funny thing is that our other cats (the late Savannah) and Steve also learned from her to come when we sang!!

I'm so sorry but I'm glad you were able to be with her when she left. Maybe Dick Clark was playing some music in heaven that just called to her and now she's the mascot on heaven's Bandstand.

I'm so sorry, hon.

I always swore one day I'd have a cat named Pyewacket who rode around on my shoulders the way the cat in the movie did, but though we've had a lot of wonderful cats, none of them has ever seemed like a true Pyewacket.

I'm so glad you had your Pyewacket for so many years. I know it must be terrible to lose her so suddenly, but it's a blessing that she was happy and able-bodied up until the end. *hugs*
